Using the Flex profiler 3.x

September 23 2008 by Julien Lestel

Adobe Flex 3 allows us to analyze the memory consumed by your application Flex at your development.

Alex Harui created a SWF to simultaneously view the presentation and learn to use the Profiler. He speaks of the differences between profiler memory System.totalMemory and processes in memory and shows us how he analyzes the 2 main scenarios ammenant memory loss.

Watch the presentation here.

The presentation in this SWF is controlled by an XML file. A single engine covers XML parsing and the user interface creates widgets like dictation by the XML. To change the presentation, all that remains to do is change the XML format. The source is available here:

Download FlexBuilder Project

The SWF also demonstrates a technique to improve the startup time of Flex applications.

Hoping that this may help you. Feel free to send us your feedback on best practices for using the Profiler in Adobe Flex 3 ;)

For a reminder about the different features of the Profiler, I had already written an article on flex info: Using the Profiler in Flex 3

Convos: Groups Online

09 September 2008 by Julien Lestel

Convos is a recent Flex application that allows groups to easily manage your subscriptions. As Google Groups, convos allows users to create online groups with their email address. Once logged in, users can easily see messages, make lists, create events in a calendar, manage photos and much more for each group to which it subscribes.

Note that this application is still under development. For the technical side, they use Java at the server level, and work with Amazon's EC 2 (they also use the storage system Amazon S3).

Convos is a good application, I think it settled the few bugs and improve a minimum if the user interface and can become a flagship application of the Web. To keep your bookmarks therefore :)
